It is a long time ago since I wrote on this blog. Mainly because I was busy with my placement and during the weekends with relaxing and being with my girlfriend…
But last week I got ill. I did not get any vaccinations for this tropical country, the Netherlands. Nor did they ask at the border if I had the right vaccinations. So as a dutchman I got a very common dutch sickness: the flu. Well I can describe how it feels to have the flu. I can describe what happens when you have the flu. But I will leave it up to you… Probably you already have an image with flu and I guess it is not a positive image, is it? Ok lets write about my placement.
Today two other guys arrived for their placement. They are from the bible college ‘De wittenberg‘. That is the bible college where I went before I came to Redcliffe. I will stay with them in an empty appartment, withouth any comfort. Just only a matras and that is it… Well its fine for me. A matras is enough for sleeping and during day time I will be busy with my placement.
There is some good news and bad news at the same time. My placement is now halfway. I have had three weeks and I have three weeks to go… But before returning to redcliffe I will have a week holiday and at the same time my girlfriend has a holiday. Well that is the great thing of a placement in the Netherlands: I can see my girlfriend more often.

My placement in Maastricht is really good. The team is really good. They are friendly people and they work in the District Wittevrouwenveld. They all live in this district. They have the vision of simple church. Everything should be simple and they are planting house churches, by going to the people and leaving them in their natural social networks. Usually when people go to church we expect them that they come to us, an inward movement. We expect that they make new friends in church and we take them out of the networks. In the vission of the team. The church goes to the people. They will meet in the house of the people and their old friends are welcome. The plan is that the gospel will spread through all those networks without that the people have to come to church - The church comes to them. So not on inward movement but an outward movement. Church visits the people at their homes.
So not the people go to the church but the church goes to the people.

It is early. It is dark. And the weather was similar to my placement last year in a sub-Siberian country. It is cold, there is snow. Not little. But a lot! I thought I planned my placement this year in a warm country, or at least compared to last year. My placement this year is in Maastricht, the Netherlands. I will do my placement with a church planting team in the city. I am looking forward to start my placement.
But for now, it is still early. I have to catch a train at 6:18AM and the journey will take almost 3 hours. Two hours later, still dark outside and more snow then home, the ticket collector came and asked for my ticket. That is fine. But I had to move to the front part of the train because this part was going to Heerlen and I had to go to Maastricht. By the next station I went out to walk forwards to sit in the front part of the train. (I could not do this inside the train 
) But I was halfway walking outside to the front part when the train left and at a station in the middle of nowhere I had to wait for the next train. Lesson for today: never trust ticket collectors but keep smiling.
At 10 o clock, an hour delay due to the weather and other adventures. I arrived in Maastricht. But nobody was waiting for me. Although I had sent an email with the time I would arrive. So I gave my supervisor a phone call. But he was not answering his phone. After half an hour I called him at home where is wife answered and told me he should answer his other phone. Ok. I will try again but no answer. After several other tries my supervisor answered his phone and picked my up from the station. He said he did not expect me so early. Oh that was disappointing. I explained I sent an email but he never received that email. Strange…
Now in the afternoon everything is fine. I have a nice place to stay, with a nice guy who lives in the middle of the district of the project and I know I am going to like this.

Jaap op de skies
Het is alweer het eind van een lange en leuke vakantie. Het einde van 3 weken kerstvakantie. Een tijd om oude bekenden weer op te zoeken, en ook een tijd om met een speciaal iemand door te brengen. Een tijd om in Nederland te zijn. Alhoewel… Van de 3 weken zat ik 1 week in Oostenrijk op Wintersport met mijn familie. Erg leuk. Het was de eerste keer en het was supertof.
Het was een toffe vakantie waarbij aan het eind mensen om mij heen een voor een geveld werden door de griep. Voorlopig heb ik het nog niet gehad. Nu de vakantie voorbij is; is het uitkijken na een nieuwe ervaring ik ga namelijk stage lopen in Maasstricht bij een interkerkelijk gemeentestichtingsproject. (dat is wel een woord voor galgje). Ik heb er enorm veel zin in. Ik zal over mijn ervaring nog wel eens bloggen. Introduction
The question for this is essay is as follows. Do you believe that ‘the era of the political dominance of the nation state is now effectively over’? In what ways might the practice of mission be affected by this debate?
To my opinion the nation state still has power but it is declining. In this essay I try to explain why I believe this and then I describe how this affects mission.
Because of the word limit of this essay I won’t give a definition of the nation state[1].

En dan was het van het weekend nog sinterklaas. Niet alleen in Nederland, nee die goed heilige man is op zijn wandelschoenen naar Engeland gekomen. Heeft het roomse overkleed omgeruild voor een echte Anglicaanse bischoppen jurk en had een papieren mijter. Wel apart om kadotjes te geven terwijl het nog geen kerst is. Wel apart om kadotjes te geven tijdens kerst. Ehm volgens mij is dat een cultuur-clash. Vooruit dan maar nog even foto van Sinterklaas na een dag sinterklaas spelen.
Overigens is de persoon op de foto niet de echte sinterklaas. Nee dat was degene die de foto maakte.

Zojuist was ik in de keuken. Gewoon even voor de gezelligheid en we hadden het over gezond eten en over Engels eten. Want een Engels gebakken eitje is geen gebakken eitje. Nee naar mijn idee moet je een ei met zo min mogelijk boter of olie bakken. Voorkeur gaat uit naar boter. De engelse voorkeur gaat uit naar olie. Dus ik voor doen hoe je nu een echte ei bakt. Dus om tegemoet te komen aan engelse gewoontes gebruikte ik olie. Wat een vette troep. Dus Liam (hij is een Engelsman) vroeg of ik ook meteen toast kon maken want dan at hij het ei wel op. Prima. Want het was toch alleen als voorbeeld. Dus ik een heel klein beetje, echt een heel klein beetje olie in de pan. Ei erbij en bakken maar. Na een minuutje ei even omdraaien en klaar is het ei. Maar de Engelsen die stonden me daar toch te kijken. Ze snapten er niks van en ze vonden het ei er walgelijk uitzien, het lijkt wel een pannenkoek.
Dus hun uitleggen dat je een ei bakt, dan moet het gele zacht en vloeibaar blijven. Maar het moet wel koken anders krijg je Salmonella. Dus wat doe je giet de koekenpan voel met olie. Laat de olie heet worden, koken. Doet dan het ei erbij en je zorgt ervoor dat de dooier heel blijft en ondertussen moet je de olie over het ei heen scheppen. Dat is een Engels gebakken eitje. Naar mijn idee is dat een gefrituurde ei.
Maar goed ieder zijn smaak. Overigens heb ik mijn ei aan de andere Nederlanders hier ter keuring aangeboden om te laten zien dat ik het op De Juiste manier deed.

Het was donker. Hij sloop door het donkere steegje. Totdat hij achter het gebouw was. Waar alle fietsen stonden. Wat zag hij daar? Een fiets die staat niet op slot. Er zit niet eens een hangslot aan. Hup meenemen die fiets. Want dit gaat wel erg makkelijk. Hup fiets uit het rek. En fietsen maar…. Wat is dat nu? De fiets wil niet vooruit, hij wil echt niet. Als de dief trapt en trapt er zit gewoon geen beweging in. Ach laat ook maar denkt de dief en gooit de fiets neer en rent er van door.
Tja zo zal het vannacht wel gegaan zijn. Want er was een poging gedaan tot een fietsen diefstal. Alleen had de dief een klein dingetje over het hoofd gezien dat Nederlanders een slot op een fiets hebben zitten aan het frame vast. En tja zo werd er vanochtend een fiets gevonden hier in het steegje. Gewoon op de grond en niet in het fietsenrek. De mogelijke dief is nog niet gevonden.
Oja voordat de vrouwelijk lezers zich beledigd voelen. Waar hij staat kan ook zij gelezen worden. Want ik weet niet of een dief een vrouw of een man is…

Ook voor het vak pastoral care moest ik een paper schrijven. Ik heb het gedaan over zelf-acceptatie. Over het feit dat je eerst je zelf moet accepteren voordat je anderen kunt accepteren.

Er werd veel gelachen. De een grap na de andere werd gemaakt. Het was erg gezellig, ofschoon Engelsen dat woord niet kennen. We lachten veel, terwijl het een serieuze les was. Tijdens de les dacht ik; dit had een serieuze les moeten zijn. Een les over conflicthantering. Iets wat persoonlijk kan zijn. Na de les kwam ik er achter dat ik getuige was van een typisch Engelse gewoonte. Er werd veel gelachen, niet omdat we met z’n alleen een melige bui hadden. Nee, de les was bloed serieus. De les was erg persoonlijk. Want wat ik zag, was dat juist op het moment dat de les persoonlijk aan het worden was, er een grap gemaakt werd en de les werd weer iets minder persoonlijk. En dat is een typisch Engelse gewoonte, als iets te persoonlijk wordt, als iets te dichtbij komt, dan wordt er een grap gemaakt, zodat een echte Engelsman weet: oh ik ben iets te ver gegaan. En dat is wat er gebeurde in een les over conflicthantering. Is de les confronterend geweest? Was het echt persoonlijk en leerzaam? Naar mijn eigen maatstaven niet. We bleven veels te veel op een afstand, zo leer je nooit hoe je een conflict moet hanteren en dat lijkt me toch wel belangrijk als je het vak Pastoral Care volgt. Maar ja dat is een nadeel van in Engeland studeren… Niet altijd alles is helemaal op en top goed. Hoewel… Ik heb flink gelachen en genoten van de les vanochtend. Ik mag de Engelse humor wel.
